Gainesville, Fla. <\/strong>\u2013 Since 2021, New Worlds Reading has shipped 10 million books to more than 460,000 students across the state of Florida, including more than 300,000 students this academic year. This milestone marks a significant step forward in Florida\u2019s effort to foster a love of reading and improve literacy outcomes for children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each month during the school year, New Worlds Reading delivers free, high-quality books to eligible VPK through 5th grade students along with family engagement activities to support reading at home. Students and their families choose which books they want to receive in English, Spanish, Haitian Creole or braille. The program\u2019s goal is simple: to help Florida's striving readers strengthen their literacy skills, build reading confidence, and foster a lifelong love of reading.  In its Annual Report, New Worlds Reading found that enrolled students made significant gains of up to 70% growth rates from August 2023 to May 2024 in reading achievement compared to their eligible unenrolled peers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis milestone is more than a number\u2014it\u2019s a celebration of Florida families making reading part of their everyday lives,\u201d<\/strong> said Shaunt\u00e9 Duggins, Ph.D., Associate Director of State Initiatives at the UF Lastinger Center for Learning. \u201cTen million books represent ten million opportunities for children to discover new worlds, build literacy skills, and fall in love with reading.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In addition to at-home book delivery for children and families, the Lastinger Center creates professional learning opportunities for teachers. These one and a half day workshops are based in the Science of Reading and connect the New Worlds Reading at-home book delivery program to classroom instruction. Last year, over 900 educators from 56 counties participated in New Worlds Reading Teacher Professional Learning<\/strong><\/a>.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an effort to meet families where they are, New Worlds Reading also has a team of six Family and Community Engagement Specialists<\/strong><\/a> and a Regional Partnership program<\/strong><\/a>. By partnering with organizations across the state, New Worlds Reading hosted or attended more than 1,000 community events in the 2023-2024 academic year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
