Month, the New Worlds Reading Initiative is giving Florida families an inside look\u2014through the lens of one curious fifth grader\u2014into how reading catalyzed three local professionals to follow their dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">In Florida, there are more than 500,000 eligible K-5th\u2009grade students in public and district-sponsored charter schools who are not yet reading on grade level.\u2009A first-of-its-kind statewide literacy program,\u2009New Worlds Reading received bipartisan support in the Florida legislature and was created to tackle this issue by delivering free books and reading activities directly\u2009to the doorsteps of\u2009eligible\u2009K-5th\u2009grade students. Enrolled students receive a book each month during the school year, with an additional three bonus books for this year! Since the launch of New Worlds Reading in October 2021, the program has shipped more than two million books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">National Reading Month is a chance to showcase how reading shapes who we become. Launching this month, the New Worlds Reading \u2018Reading Shapes Passions\u2019 series follows 10-year-old Saoirse Elizabeth from Tampa as she interviews three Florida professionals and provides an inside look into the roles reading played in their career paths. \u2018Reading Shapes Passions\u2019 will show families how reading can transform lives in incredible ways. She uses her large following on Instagram and TikTok platforms to get young people excited about STEM.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>Regina Y. Walden, Winter Haven, FL<\/strong>: Regina is a children\u2019s book author and reading and ESL instructor at Winter Haven Senior High School. Regina strives to write books kids love.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>Alicia Zicchino, Tampa, FL<\/strong>: Alicia is a certified veterinary technician. The UF Lastinger Center has partnered with Scholastic, the world\u2019s largest publisher and distributor of children\u2019s books.
