Create Reading Routines

Speaker: Welcome to the New Worlds Reading Initiative. In this video, we will highlight how to create reading routines that will support your child as they become an independent reader. Creating reading routines together with your child will make reading a habit for years to come.

Here are some things you can try at home.

Let your child select the book. When children select their own books based on their interests, reading becomes a choice rather than a chore. If they're unsure of what to read, visit your local public library or school librarian for suggestions.

Make your reading spot quiet and comfortable. It's difficult to read when you are surrounded by distractions. Place your phone on silent, turn off the TV, and turn down the music. Get comfortable. Find a spot on a bed, couch, or even pillows on the floor.

Establish a regular time to read. When you set aside a time to read, it becomes a regular part of your day. It's great to read right before bedtime as a way to relax, but you can choose to read any time. Whatever time you choose, stick to it.

New routines require consistency. Your routines will look different because you're making them work for you. Whether your child is reading independently or still getting ready to read on their own, establishing routines will help. The most important thing is to keep reading every day.
